Scanner deactivation and reactivation

Case:

This article discusses new IMiS/Scan feature: scanner deactivation and reactivation. The feature enables IMiS/Scan user to disconnect from the scanner while working from home without scanner physically present and when back to office to reconnect the scanner.

Description:

IMiS/Scan users that work both in the office (with scanner) and at home (without scanner) had to remove the scanner before working at home to avoid scanner driver Configure Device Settings dialogs that appeared each time driver was queried. When returning to office the scanner had to be selected and configured again to continue working as before.

With IMiS/Scan 10.2.2110 we have implemented a new feature that helps in this kind of situation.

Before leaving office to work from home the user has to deactivate the scanner from IMiS/Scan.

Deactivation will save all the scanner settings and break the connection with scanner driver.

Scanner deactivation can be done from the Scanner section of the Scan category on the Preferences dialog.

While scanner is still in use the user opens Preferences dialog either through the tray icon popup menu, document window Tools menu or toolbar button.

To deactivate scanner user clicks the Disable button in the Scanner section. The deactivation is preformed only after user confirms the changes with OK button.

Deactivation makes backup copies of scanner driver name and settings for each profile and then removes scanner driver name and settings for all profiles in the registry and disconnects scanner from the application.

If scanner deactivation procedure was successfully done the button caption changes to Enable. From this point forward user can use IMiS/Scan without scanner.

When returning back to office user can reactivate scanner along with its settings without the need to select the scanner from Select scanner dialog and configuring the scanner and profile.

To reactivate scanner user clicks on the Enable button in the Scanner section. The reactivation is preformed only after user confirms the changes with OK button.

Upon successful scanner reactivation procedure the button caption changes back to Disable.

The scanner is now ready to use like before it was deactivated.

Note the difference from using Remove button. When Remove button is used, the scanner settings are removed and scanner is disconnected from application. User needs to select and configure the scanner again, while reactivating the scanner recovers previous configuration.
