Architecture

With IMiS you can create/store paper based documents on several ways:

as a link to an object, stored on IMiS/ARC storage server or IBM CM storage server
as a link to a file, stored on file server(s)
as an ordinary attachment (.tif or .pdf) stored into Notes document
as an ODMA attachment on Domino.Doc

Scanned documents can be quite large, especially if you are dealing with lots of pages or if they contain colour or grayscale parts. That's why we do recommend to store only links into Notes documents while image itself have to be stored either on IMiS/ARC or somewhere on file server.

The following table presents so called IMiS Table with all information (links) about documents that are stored on IMiS/ARC server. With such architecture IMiS takes only up to 128 bytes of Notes document instead of several Kb's (OLE link, for instance could take from 7 - 23 Kb) or even Megabytes (in case that image is stored as attachment in Notes document).

Storing images on IMiS/ARC (or on file server) provides several advantages, like:

It takes less space in Notes database
You can make changes to the original image (add, delete, reorder pages, etc) and changes are reflected in any Notes document/database where image is linked to.
Using IMiS/OCR Client or IMiS/OCR Server automatically
Better performance of Notes application(s) since Notes documents (and NSFs) are much smaller without attachments.
Notes documents contain references to images. Instead of storing multiple copies of the same image within several Notes documents, you can create only links (IMiS Table) to a single image, stored on IMiS/ARC or somewhere on file system/file server (or on IMiS/ARC Server).
