Documents category of the Preferences dialog is used for selecting the file format of new documents and setting the compression of new pages. New pages can be created either with scanning of paper documents or with copy/pasting images through clipboard.

In the File format group box select default document save format:

Multipage TIFF file (*.tif) to create multipage TIFF files
Adobe PDF file (*.pdf) to create image-only PDF/A-1b files.

In the Compression for new pages group box select an appropriate compression type for each image color format. For example, when scanning black&white images with IMiS/Scan, the resulting image file in the below case would be TIFF with G4 compression. Available compression types depend on the selected file format and are changed accordingly with the change of the file format. Note that, when changing the file format the color format compression types are set to their default values.

Note: File format selection does not effect already opened documents, it only applies to new documents after closing the Preferences dialog.
